"Shaheed is the person who bears witness that Allah's law is more precious to him than his own life."Sayyid Qutb said the above line to an officer who asked him about the meaning of Shaheed during his 'trial' in 1966, a trial that was fabricated to justify killing him. It was denounced by lawyers and human rights organizations all over the world.*
It is said that he said "Alhamdulillah" and smiled when he was read his death sentence.
Sayyid Qutb made a mistake that cost the Muslim Ummah dearly. He was killed quickly after it and thus he didn't come to see its results (or he'd have corrected it probably). I'll write about it in a future post inshAllah.
*As mentioned in his biography, Sayyid Qutb from Birth to Martyrdom, by Dr. Salah Abdul Fattah AlKhalidi.

I think they knew killing him would make him a martyr, but they also knew they had to go through with it anyway. He was causing too much trouble, he was just too dangerous. And he kept at it, coming up with new ways to diss the West and challenge the Middle East in what they wanted to accomplish.
They had to know that his followers would consider him a 'martyr' after his death, yet they still executed him. Why? He was just too much to handle. I suppose. I would like a better answer.
